I remember Barbara because my father John Brooks sang in a gospel quartet with her father John Palmer. We grew up across the street from each other. Although we grew older and moved away i would always ask about her whenever i ran into her sister Emily.
My thoughts and prayers are with the Hildreth and Palmer family.

When my sister ask me if I seen this my heart got heavy. I lived across the street from her mom. Auntie Jean is what I called her and she was just that! She use to come to Carbondale and visit I can remember always getting excited she was a classy woman of God she was also friends with my grandma in Rockford I see she passed the day of my brother’s Anthony funeral I can’t express enough how much she’s going to be missed my heart goes out to her family love y’all

During my first year of teaching, Barb Hildreth stopped by to encourage me and share one quick bit of advice, while I was setting up my classroom. Her recommendation was to implement my pedagogy, not copy others. Those powerful words have led me to a great and fulfilling 25 year career of helping students and families. I am forever grateful for her kindness and wisdom. On July 31st the world became less brighter without one of Rockford Public Schools shining stars. May two of Stiles Elementary School legends: Barb and Principal Dr. Cheryl Box be reunited in heaven. And, may God bless brother Truman aka “Holt” her knight in shining armor.
